No, there's no SEAI grant to swap an old oil boiler for a new one. Here's what actually is funded, and how to get real value.
By MyOil Editor ·
If you're hoping the SEAI will help pay for a new oil boiler to replace your old one, here's the straight answer: no, there isn't a grant for that. The SEAI does not fund the purchase or installation of a replacement fossil-fuel boiler, oil or gas. So if your boiler is on its last legs and you're picturing a cheque towards a shiny new one, that particular grant doesn't exist.
That's the part people search for and rarely get told plainly. But it's not the whole story, because there is real money on the table for the house around the boiler.
Even though the boiler itself isn't grant-aided, several things that make an oil-heated home cheaper and warmer are. Under the SEAI Home Energy Grants scheme (via registered contractors), you can get support for:
The idea is simple: a well-controlled, well-insulated house burns less oil per fill, whatever boiler is sitting in the shed.
If you're on certain welfare payments (such as Fuel Allowance, Working Family Payment or others), the Warmer Homes Scheme can deliver insulation and energy upgrades free of charge. It's aimed at households at risk of energy poverty and is genuinely worth checking, because it can transform how much oil an older house needs. Eligibility rules apply, so confirm the current list before assuming.
Always check the live details on SEAI.ie and Citizens Information, as grant amounts and eligibility get updated.
Most of the larger grants (heat pumps, one-stop-shop deep retrofits) are geared towards moving homes off fossil fuels. That's the policy direction, and it's why there's no oil-for-oil grant.
We're not here to push you towards a heat pump. A heat pump only performs well in a properly insulated, airtight home, and for many older Irish houses that means significant fabric work first. If your home isn't ready, a heat pump can leave you cold and disappointed. For plenty of households, the sensible path is: fix the insulation, add the heating controls, keep the oil boiler running efficiently, and reassess later. That's a legitimate choice, not a failure.
If a new boiler is coming out of your own pocket anyway, focus your energy (and any grants) where they pay back:
That last point matters. The difference between suppliers on a single 900-litre fill can be tens of euro, and running dry (then paying for a boiler restart or an emergency top-up) wipes out any grant saving fast.
So: no grant for the boiler, yes to grants for the house around it, and plenty you can do today to spend less on oil either way.
