Struggling to afford a fill? Here's the real help available in Ireland, from Fuel Allowance to emergency payments, plus tactics to stretch every euro.

Heating oil comes in one big lump. Unlike gas or electricity, you can't pay it off monthly on a meter, so a fill can feel like a wall of money arriving all at once. If money is tight, the good news is there is real help in Ireland, and there are practical ways to make a smaller order work without running dry.
This is a plain guide to the supports that exist and the tactics that stretch a tank. We don't sell oil, so none of this is about getting you to buy more.
The Fuel Allowance is the big one for oil-heated homes. It's a weekly payment from the Department of Social Protection paid over the winter months to people on certain long-term social welfare payments (for example the State Pension, Jobseeker's Allowance long-term, One-Parent Family Payment, and others).
Key things to know:
If you think you might qualify and aren't getting it, apply. People miss out simply by not applying. Search "Fuel Allowance" on gov.ie or ask at your local Intreo/Citizens Information office.
If you're facing a bill you genuinely can't meet, like a fill you can't afford, the Additional Needs Payment (ANP) can help. It's a one-off payment from the Community Welfare Service for an essential, unexpected cost.
Contact your local Community Welfare Officer through your Intreo centre. Don't be shy about it, this is what the scheme is for.
Citizens Information (citizensinformation.ie) is the best neutral place to check what you personally qualify for.
Many suppliers set a minimum around 300 litres, and some go to 500 litres. Small top-ups can carry a higher price per litre and sometimes a small delivery charge, so a tiny order isn't always the bargain it looks. Work out the smallest order that (a) meets the minimum and (b) gets you safely to your next payday or Fuel Allowance instalment.
Before you commit, compare local prices for your county so you know the going range and aren't caught out by one high quote.
Running completely dry is the expensive mistake. An empty tank can pull sludge and air into the line and cause a boiler lockout, which sometimes needs a technician to restart. Knowing roughly when you'll run out lets you plan a fill around money coming in rather than in a panic.
Use our free see when you'll run out tool to turn your usage into a rough date, so you can line up an order with your budget instead of guessing.
Instead of ringing around every week, set a price-drop alert so you hear when local prices ease. That way you can act when you're ready and have the money in place, without watching prices daily.
Some suppliers offer budget or top-up plans that let you pay in smaller amounts across the year. Ask directly. It won't reduce the total, but it can turn one dreaded lump into manageable chunks.
If you're anxious about the next fill, do two things today: check your eligibility for Fuel Allowance and the Additional Needs Payment through Citizens Information, and work out your run-out date so you can plan an order around money coming in. Getting ahead of it is what stops a cold week turning into a crisis.
