Oil Theft and Heating Scams: What to Watch For This Summer

From doorstep scams to opportunist theft, warmer months bring their own risks for oil-heated homes.

By MyOil Newsroom ·

Summary

With heating oil prices shifting and households beginning to think about winter prep, this is a good moment to be aware of the risks around oil theft and heating scams. Opportunists tend to target homes that are less vigilant during the warmer months, and a few simple steps can help protect your tank and your wallet.

A Quiet Season Is Not Always a Safe Season

Summer often feels like a low-risk time for heating oil households. The boiler is off, the tank is sitting quietly, and winter feels far away. But that relaxed attitude is exactly what opportunists rely on.

Oil theft tends to rise when prices are high enough to make the fuel worth stealing, but also when tanks are left unattended for long periods. With many families away on holidays and less foot traffic around properties, summer can be a prime window for tank thieves.

Common signs of oil theft include a tank level that has dropped unexpectedly, muddy or disturbed ground around the tank, or unfamiliar tyre tracks near your property. If you suspect your tank has been tampered with, contact your supplier and, if theft is confirmed, the police. Do not attempt to inspect pipework yourself if there is any sign of damage or a strong fuel smell. Call a qualified OFTEC-registered technician to carry out a safe inspection.

Doorstep and Phone Scams to Watch

Heating scams typically peak when prices are in the news, and prices have been making headlines recently. According to several outlets including El-Balad.com and SSBCrack, home heating oil in Northern Ireland has fallen below £400 per fill, linked to broader global crude price movements. The Daily Record reports that a Stirling MP has raised concerns about potential price surges ahead of winter, as households begin planning their seasonal top-ups.

When prices are dropping, scammers sometimes pose as suppliers offering deals that seem too good to be true, collecting payment upfront and delivering nothing. When prices are rising, a different tactic appears, callers claiming your boiler or tank needs urgent replacement and pressuring you to sign up quickly.

A few simple rules help:

  • Always deal with a supplier you can independently verify, using contact details you find yourself, not ones given to you by a caller.
  • Be wary of any company demanding full payment before delivery.
  • If someone arrives unannounced offering cheap oil, do not agree on the spot. Take their details and check them out first.
  • For boiler or tank work, use an OFTEC-registered technician. You can search the official OFTEC register online.

Spills and Their Aftermath

The Batavian reported a home heating oil spill on Ellicott Street in Batavia recently, requiring a cleanup operation. Spills can happen for a number of reasons, from overfilling to damage caused by a theft attempt or ageing pipework. Even a modest spill can cause significant environmental damage and may carry a legal liability for the homeowner.

If you notice oil around your tank or a strong fuel smell, do not use naked flames or turn electrical switches on or off nearby. Contact an OFTEC-registered professional and, if there is any risk of the oil reaching a drain or watercourse, notify the relevant environmental authority.
